Andrew M. Spingler
Senior Strategy Advisor
Andy founded The Focal Point in 1989 to introduce the principles of information architecture and design to the emerging field of trial consulting. His interest in the field began in the early 1980s when he worked with the accounting firm of KPMG, where one of his responsibilities was helping partners prepare their testimony as expert witnesses in a variety of civil litigation matters. He used the tools of the nascent "desktop publishing" industry to create clear, sophisticated, and persuasive presentations that illuminated the core lines of reasoning when the partners testified at trial.
With over 30 years of experience pioneering a collaborative creative process to evaluate and simplify courtroom presentations for many of this country’s most sophisticated trial lawyers, Andy specializes in working to make complex cases easier to understand and more persuasive to juries. In addition to design and communication consulting, his practice includes case analysis and strategy development, mock trial and focus group research, and jury selection.
He has provided these services in hundreds of cases, including the In re Deepwater Horizon litigation; United States of America v. AT&T, Inc.; Colorado v. Kobe Bean Bryant; the prosecution in State of California v. Scott Peterson; and the plaintiff’s patent trial team in University of California v. Genentech, which achieved one of the largest settlements ever involving DNA coding for human growth hormone.
Andy has spoken and published on the subject of visual communication in the courtroom for the ABA, California Continuing Education of the Bar (CEB), the California Judges Association, and numerous multi-national law firms. Andy is a CPA and holds a BA in Business Economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his wife, Linda, and has three grown children.
